Thanasis Margaritis was born in Desfina in 1941 and was the first in his family to study in Athens. He experienced his student years during Greece's political crisis in the 1960s and served in the military. After marrying shortly before the 1967 dictatorship, he emigrated to Canada. Thanasis arrived in Toronto, later moved to St. Thomas, and worked various jobs while learning English. He became active in educational initiatives and was involved with the Greek Community of Toronto, particularly through cultural efforts like performing Karagiozis.
