John Burry was born in 1949 in Toronto. His parents immigrated to Toronto in the early 1920s. John Burry is the director of the documentray titled "Violent August: The 1918 Anti-Greek Riots in Toronto." In his early life, Burry and his siblings were involved in various aspects of the Greek community before he distanced himself in his young adulthood. Language and identity have played an important role in his life, as well as his desire to raise awareness and share Greek-Canadian stories through the making of documentary films.
