Vasilios Gatzios was born in Ligourio, Nafplio in 1931 and grew up in a farming family with three sisters. During the Second World War, he experienced the Occupation and the difficulties of the time, such as conscription, food shortages and the presence of Italian and German troops. Gatzios served his military service in the artillery, where he was trained as a sniper and remained as an instructor for 18 months. After the army, Vasilis engaged in trade, transporting and selling oil and other products to neighboring villages. In 1961 he married Eleni and they later emigrated to Canada.
